Acer rubrum has reddish buds in spring, its red leaf petioles in summer, and brilliant red foliage in fall, earning its common name of ‘red maple.’ It the most abundant native tree in eastern North America and grows largest in or near swamps, though it is adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions. It is commonly used in landscaping and can be used for small-scale syrup and lumber production.
